Motorola has delivered the best e-mail experience I have ever seen on an Android device. MessagingĪlthough I'm not completely satisfied with the messaging home screen widgets, the actual messaging software is outstanding-arguably the killer feature of the Droid X. I have no complaints at all with Motorola's weather and calendar widgets, which work and look great. The social networking widgets need a lot of work. The e-mail widget is really close to being great Motorola just needs to fix it so that you can choose whether it hides messages that you've already seen. The resizing feature is really brilliant and works far better than I initially expected. It does a nice job of showcasing the value of the resizing feature. I especially like the resizable sticky note widget, which lets you put an arbitrary block of editable text with a heading on the home screen. In addition to the typical stuff that you would expect, Motorola's widget collection has a few clever extras that are useful.

It's easier to just open Motorola's great social networking application, which gives you a real scrollable timeline like any standard microblogging client. In overlay mode, flipping between individual Twitter and Facebook messages is just too slow to be practical.

You have to tap it and switch to the overlay mode to see the full text of the individual message. It seems to max out at 70 characters and then truncates the rest of the message. The widget that shows the latest Twitter and Facebook status updates from your friends can't show a full 140 characters at any size. The social network widgets aren't particularly useful. I want to be able to always have access to my most recent messages through the widgets, regardless of whether or not I've already read them. If you tap the email widget and flip through several messages, those messages will no longer be accessible through the widget when I hit the back button to close the overlay. One of my biggest frustrations with the messaging widgets is that they only show unread messages. The messaging widgets look cool, but there are some limitations and poor design decisions that detract greatly from their value.
